Should have passed a 3 year Diploma course in Engineering (Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics / Automobile / Computer Science/ Instrumentation Technology/ Information Technology) with at least 50% marks from a Govt. recognized Polytechnic Institute.

Candidate should have passed Intermediate/10+2 with Science, Arts, Commerce subjects or equivalent vocational courses with minimum 50% marks in aggregate. Vocational course should be affiliated/ recognized by CBSE/State Education Boards/Councils which are duly recognized at par with 10+2 by Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

As an airman in the Indian Air Force, you make sure that all the air and ground operations run smoothly. From operating Air Defense systems to fitting missiles, you are involved in all activities of an air base and give support to various technical and non technical jobs.

Depending on your educational qualification, you can join the Air Force in the Technical Trades or Non-Technical Trades. No matter at what level you start your career, the Air Force gives you opportunities to learn and grow to in the organization. Physical Standards
To get selected as an Airman, the candidate must be physically and mentally FIT to perform duties in any part of the world in any climate and terrain. The common and Specific Medical Standards to become an Airman are as follows :-

Height :Minimum acceptable height : 152.5 cm EXCEPT FOR Auto Technician (Mechanical Transport Driver) and Certain Technical trades : 165 cm {minimum leg length for Auto Technician (Mechanical Transport Driver) and certain technical trades is 99cm} Indian Air Force (Police) : 175 cm Indian Air Force (Security) : 172 cm Ground Training Instructor : 167 cm Musician : 162 cm
 

Note: For candidates from Uttranchal and North-Eastern States, relaxation in height by 10 cm, 4.5 cm and 2.5 cm is given for Indian Air Force (Security), Ground Training Instructor and Auto Technician (Mechanical Transport Driver) trades respectively. The common and Specific Medical Standards to become an Airman are as follows:- • Weight: Weight should be proportionate to height and age. • Chest: Minimum range of expansion : 5 cm • Vision: There are different visual standards specific to different trades. However, the common minimum visual standards acceptable for some of the trades are :-

(i) Unaided vision : 6/36 each eye. (ii) Correctable with spectacles : at least 6/9 each eye. (iii) Diopteric power: not exceeding +3.5 Diopters including Astigmatism. (iv) Field of vision : Full (v) Color perception : Minimum CP-III (vi) Corneal Surgery : PRK/LASIK is not acceptable

Note: Indian Air Force (Police) & Indian Air Force (Security) trades require 6/6 vision each eye unaided and CP-II i.e.no use of spectacles permissible for these trades. • Hearing: Should have normal hearing i.e. able to hear forced whisper from a distance of 6 meters by each ear separately. • Dental: Should have healthy gums, good set of teeth and minimum 14 dental points. • Health: Should have no medical or surgical deformity and should be free from all communicable diseases & skin ailments. Note: Candidates are advised to get tartar & stains removed from their teeth before appearing for the written test .Ears to be free of wax. They should bring latest prescription and spectacles for corrected vision, if used. They should be prepared to stay for four to five days for which they have to make their own arrangements. No TA/DA will be admissible.

Training is however liable to be terminated at any time if the trainee fails to achieve the required standards in academics, profession, physical fitness and discipline or is found to be medically unfit.

The ranks of airmen in the Indian Air Force are as follows:

Junior Warrant Officer - JWO
Warrant Officer - WO Master Warrant Officer - MWO

Career Prospects
The initial period of engagement in the IAF is 20 years, which can be extended up to the age of 57 years. Promotion up to the rank of Master Warrant Officer exists to the deserving airmen. Provision for grant of Honorary Commission to the deserving Warrant Officers and Master Warrant Officer. Opportunities to become a Commissioned Officer also exists for the deserving personnel.

Eligible Airmen can apply for selection as Officers in Flying (Pilot) Branch between the age group 19 to 20 years. Opportunities are also available for serving airmen for selection to officer rank in the Ground Duty Branches other than Medical Branch as per rules.

Honorary Commission: Selected MWOs / WOs are granted Honorary Commission in the last year of their service before superannuating on Republic day & Independence Day each year. On grant of Honorary Commission, they are eligible for higher rates of pay and allowances. 

SNCO's Commissions : Airmen of the Sgt and above of Group 'X' technical trades are eligible to apply for grant of Permanent Commissioning in AE (L) and AE (M) branches.


 

The eligible condition will be:

(b) Age Limit :Below 40 Years
(c) Rank :Sgt (Acts or Substantive) and above with a minimum of 10 years of service.
